Are electricity companies scared of re-regulation? (Dallas Morning News)

An article by my colleagues Steve McGonigle and Ed Timms earlier this month stirred up talk about whether deregulation has been good for consumers.

The article pointed out that a specific kind of electricity service, pre-paid service without a device to exactly measure usage, doesn’t work well with the current rules and laws, and can leave customers in dire situations. This lead to a fresh conversation about deregulation.

That conversation seems to put Texas electric companies and supporters of the competitive market on the defensive. Ten years after the Legislature deregulated the wholesale and retail markets and allowed companies to compete for business, the industry still faces the risk that angry voters will convince politicians to reverse the process.
